During the twenty year interval , she became one of the star actresses in French film and though occasionally singing theme songs to her movies has otherwise given the recording studio a wide berth. Her father Serge Gainsbourg relished his own notoriety and became a cultural hero but seemed to have no qualms about using his daughter for shock value… Lemon Incest ( the title’s a pun on the “zest of a lemon”) was made when Charlotte was 13 and despite, or maybe because of its dubious nature, went to number 1 on the French charts. Two years later, in 1986, he masterminded Charlotte Forever, linked to a film of the same name in which Gainsbourg père et fille starred. Teenage Charlotte’s innocent little girl’s voice set against the Gauloise-stained tones of a weary middle-aged roué (her dad) provide moments of mischievously provocative kitsch.
