The Boston band started by Jonathan Richman, musically influenced by the Velvet Underground but lyrically in a world of their own thanks to Richman’s original mind. It was their first album which sealed the Modern Lovers reputation but though released in 1976 it was actually recorded four years earlier -- not long after these live shows. The line-up at this time (disbanded in 1973) provided some rich pedigree lines for the rock family tree: drummer David Robinson went on to Cars, while Jerry Harrison (keyboards) joined Talking Heads. Tracks here include classic Richman songs – Roadrunner, Pablo Picasso etc— and though recording quality is not the best and the performances on the rough and ready side, this disc very much captures the spirit of the band’s vision.
