Title: Negro Spirituals (2CD)
Label:
Fremeaux
Cat No
FA168
This 2CD set concentrates on the ‘concert’ or ‘salon’ recordings of the Negro Spiritual tradition, rather than the more unpolished, church or field-recording heritage. Starting with some of the earliest recordings in 1909 and concluding in 1948, this anthology presents outstanding renditions from talented soloists, including Paul Robeson and Marion Anderson as well as fine performances from vocal ensembles, university choirs and jubilee quartets. These dramatic, noble and serene versions using refined arrangements, help explain why the negro spiritual – derived from popular folk adaptations of bible stories and Christian hymns – is regarded today as the classical art song-form of black America. A 40 page booklet with 15 photos and English text is included.
