Though Caceres sometimes digs to the deepest roots of tango, incorporating the African rhythms which first fertilized the seeds of a new Argentinian musical movement in the late 19th century, his style is essentially European. Unsurprisingly, long term expatriation in Paris has rubbed off and the chansonnier influence is obvious……the world weary voice and sense of tristesse and nostalgia which pervade his songs bring to mind the most affecting work of Brel or Aznavour. But the essential mystery and earthiness of the tango form is never far away, conveyed with restraint by a small ensemble of percussion, strings and bandoneon and Caceres’ own delicate piano work.
