Between the generations of Charles Ives and John Cage, American music produced another true original in Henry Cowell, whose work in the realm of musical theory (he originated the term 'clusters', for example, subsequently much-used inavant-garde music of the late 20th century) has tended to overshadow his outputas a composer.
