Cicala Mvta are one of Japan's most exciting and original groups with an innovative mixture of jazz, punk, klezmer, Balkan, avant-garge, New Orleans brass band, Bartok and Japanese 'chindon' street music.
They were formed and are led by the irrepressible Wataru Okhuma on clarinet and saxophone, backed by an ever-shifting soundscape of rip-roaring tuba, distorted electric guitar, screeching sawing cellos, frantic fiddles and shuffling snare drums.
In 2000 they supported Blur in London, at the start of a 6 week tour to promote their critically praised first album "Ching Dong: The Return of Japanese Street Music" (Tropical 68801.). In Autumn 2001., they were one of the main acts on the Japanese night of the week-long London Urban Beats Festival, and there is a European Tour planned for this year.
