The Tulips, formed in 1981, are a 20 piece black band (all singers with 5 members playing guitars, drums and a bass). Their dress and make-up mimick the Blackface 'coon' minstrels popular in Cape Town in the late 1800's. They are part street performers, cabaret artists, carnival performers, etc and they mix tongue-in-cheek satire and political songs, with traditional African folk songs, American close harmony and barber-shop, old Dutch popular songs, Creole styles, hymns, wedding songs and comedy material. A unique musical law unto themselves.
