After several years since her last recording, Carleen Anderson returns with a sensational new album, "Alberta's GrandDaughter", the first on her own new Dusky Sappho Label. It's an album that shows off her incredible voice and reflects the many influences present in her music: Soul, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Rock, Pop and Dance.
Her musical pedigree is immaculate: Her mother was James Brown's lead vocalist (JB is Carleen's Godfather); her father was the Famous Flames pianist; she moved to London and formed the Young Disciples recording the classic "Apparently Nothin"; she made two fine albums for Virgin, the second with large involvement from Paul Weller; was involved in the influential first Jazzmatazz album with Guru, Donald Byrd, etc; and was lead singer with The Brand New Heavies for 2 years;
The new album features many new compositions by Carleen, including a very updated jazzy version of "Apparently Nothin"; a wonderful soul-gospel re-reading of the Oasis classic "Don't Look Back In Anger" accompanying herself solo at the piano; and a beautiful solo accapela song learned from her Grandmother.
She is appearing on 17 / 18 & 19th September at the Jazz Cafe, London, with other dates to follow.
