Gertrude Lawrence, legendary singer, dancer & actress, was Benn Clatworthy's grandmother. She died three years before his birth, in 1955. Benn went on, via guitar, to take up tenor sax in the late 1960's. In the 70's, with a recommendation from Ronnie Scott, he attended Boston's famous Berklee College, but it wasn't for him. From 1980, he has lived in California, working with jazz names like Cedar Walton, Jimmy Cleveland, Bill Holman, Tutti Heath and John Heard. On this lovely, intimate album of pieces especially associated with 'Gert', Benn uses the demanding, highly-exposed format of the duet: either with Phil Robson, an outstanding young English guitarist, or Theo Saunders, an LA-based pianist from New York, whose actor-parents had worked with Gertrude Lawrence on Broadway. Benn's playing is full of subtle technique with a perfectly, appropriate bitter-sweet tone. The CD cover shows a painting of Gertrude Lawrence by Pablo Picasso. |
