Excellent 2 CD, 40 track anthology of classic female gospel & spiritual music recorded between 1943 and 1951, and featuring artists such as: Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Wynona Carr, Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, Marion Williams, Dorothy Love Coates, Georgia Peach, plus a number of lesser-known but equally worthwhile singers.
In order to establish themselves as performers, let alone get recorded, all these artists would have had to overcome not only racial barriers, and sexual discrimination but also often the disapproval of their church leaders and communities. However, their vocal techniques and style were to influence Rhythm & Blues. Rock, Pop and Soul right up to the present day.
As always with Fremeaux releases there is a substantial booklet (48 pages) with extensive notes and many rare photos (30 in all).
