This CD explores a fascinating musical byway, presenting early piano pieces (though, effectively, there were no late ones!) by Russian-born Lourié, who fled, first, the Soviet system to 1920s Paris, then the Nazis in 1941 to the USA, where he died in obscurity in 1966. The music is wonderfully atmospheric, and these appear to be first recordings of Estampes, 4 Poèmes, Masques and the Sonatine.
