Although Ras Smaila is steeped in the blues, the influences on his new album "True Story" also draw from Rock, Afro-beat, Funk and Soul. The album features 14 striking new tracks: eleven written by Ras himself, plus a startling version of Jimi Hendrix's "Stone Free", a heartfelt reworking of Robert Johnson's "Cross Road" and a labour of love interpretation of "Zombie" by Fela Anikulapo Kuti.  The title-track is inspired by a photo of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X actually shaking hands, also reproduced on the cover.

Ras Smaila released his first album "Black Man's Blues" in France in 1999.  In August 2000 he headlined at the "Great British R&B Festival" in Colne, Lancashire; appeared at the Notting Hill Carnival; recorded a live session at BBC Pebble Mill, broadcast in November 2000 on the Paul Jones Blues Programme on BBC Radio 2. All leading to steady sales of the first album (BPCD 003) which continues to sell and is still available from Discovery.

In May, Ras Smaila will headline a nationwide Dixiefrog "World of Blues" tour of France. Then he will be touring Senegal, and is looking to build on his loyal UK following by touring here with his band later this year.
