Peter Auty (ten.), Roderick Williams (bar.), Stephen Farr (org.), Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra, Guildford Camerata, Dir. Barry Rose.
Amongst the most popular of all choral works, John Stainer's The Crucifixion was written in 1886/7 and first performed in London in 1887. With a libretto by William Sparrow Simpson, Stainer wrote some of the most memorable hymn tunes ever heard. This orchestration was completed in time for the 100th anniversary of Stainer's death and the premiere was performed in Guildford Cathedral in 2001. This recording was made likewise in 2003.
