Yann Tiersen achieved world-wide status following the success of his soundtrack music to Jean-Pierre Jeunet's acclaimed film "Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain" in 2001.
In February 2002 Yann Tiersen appeared at the Cité de la Musique Festival in Paris, performing three exceptional concerts of his music with the large orchestral ensemble Synaxis conducted by Guillaume Bourgogne. These special concerts, which involved the presence of some 50 musicians on stage. "C'était Ici", is a 29 track double album documenting this dynamic event, Several tracks feature performances by friends /guests, such as Les Têtes Raides, pop singer Dominique A, Ronan Le Bars (Breton uilleann pipe player) who had taken part in the event. Compositions from his 8 years as a recording artist are given fresh interpretations.
Including the Amelie soundtrack, this is his eighth album, following his first release "Valse Des Monstres" on Virgin France in 1995. Tiersen has proved you don't have to be a singer to hold a central place on the French music scene. This talented multi-instrumentalist ( who plays piano, violin, accordeon, guitar, melodica, etc, etc) whose haunting, magical compositions rarely include words, has established an excellent reputation thanks to his atmospheric film music and versatile one-man shows.
Born in Brest, a coastal town in Brittany, on 23 June 1970, Yann Tiersen grew up in Brittany's 'cultural capital', Rennes. Yann proved to have little aptitude for schoolwork, but he soon turned out to be a star pupil at the local Conservatoire where he studied violin and piano between the ages of 6 and 14 and later went on to train as a conductor.
