In 2002 Enrico Rava was the 13th recipient of the world's largest jazz prize - the annual JAZZPAR Prize. The trumpet player, composer and band-leader was the fifth European and first Italian to receive this award - previous recipients include Lee Konitz, David Murray, Tony Coe, Martial Solal, Jim Hall, Roy Haynes, Marilyn Mazur, etc.
At 62 years old he's playing better than ever, as this highlights session recorded at the time of the presentation proves. Leading a superb band including the great US guitarist John Abercrombie, with Gianluca Petrella (trombone), Sefano Bollani (piano), Jesper Bodilsen (bass) and Morten Lund (drums), Rava presents 4 of his compositions plus versions of Nature Boy and Dear Old Stockholm. The music is exquisite and the sound superb.
Enrico Rava began his career playing Dixieland trombone, but fell under the spell of Miles Davis. In 1964, he joined Gato Barbieri's Quartet, and over the following years toured with Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy and Lee Konitz. In 1967 he moved to New York, playing with Roswell Rudd, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Abdullah Ibrahim and Charlie Haden. From 1969 to 1971, he was he was involved in the recording of Escalator Over the Hill with Carla Bley. Over the following years, he has toured and recorded regularly (for ECM, Black Saint,Label Bleu and Soul Note.
