One of the earliest of the many Philidelphia-based R&B bands signed to Columbia in the late 40's, Chris Powell's Five Blue Flames were a great, black jump-jive band. They switched to the Okeh label and in 1951 they were joined for 16 months by the future jazz star Clifford Brown, who's on thelast 4 tracks of this disc. Ellington trombonist Tyree Glenn was also in the band.
