Re-issue of this classic 1963 album by Pepper Adams, one of the great baritone sax players, of material composed by Charles Mingus, whose band he had just left after 4 years.
There is a Quintet session with Thad Jones, Hank Jones, Paul Chambers & Mingus stalwart, Danny Richmond; and an Octet session adding Zoot Sims, Charles McPherson, Bennie Powell, with Bob Cranshaw taking over on bass.
Adams was born in New York but grew up in Detroit, playing with such up-and-coming musicians as Donald Byrd, Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, and Elvin Jones. He toured with Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Chet Baker; played with Benny Goodman (1958-1959) and was a longtime member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra (1965-1978) and led his own groups.
