2003 marks the centenary of the death of Mitrofan Belaieff, a remarkable Russian patron of the arts, who founded a music publishing house and the annual 'Glinka' prizes, from which composers still benefit today. Early recipients were Borodin and Tchaikovsky, so it is interesting to hear the works on this enterprising CD, composed 100 years or so after Belaieff first sponsored some promising Russian musicians! |
