Volume 17 of the astonishing and universally praised Ethiopiques series, presents us with a full album by Tlahoun Gessesse  -  the first-ever pan-Ethiopian star, 'The Voice'  -  who is regarded as the undisputed musical icon of his nation.

On these 17 tracks from the 1970's, his wonderful vocals are as soulful and bluesy as the tight brass sections, guitars and bands backing him.  He was also the most prolific recording artist in Ethiopian music, he died on 20th April 2009.

This is, quite simply, a superb album.
