Volume 16 of the astonishing and universally praised Ethiopiques series, presents us with an album by Asnaqetch Werqu : a superb singer who accompanies herself on the 'krar' - a traditional Ethiopian lyre with a sound between an oud and a banjo - and not so long ago, regarded as 'the Devil's instrument' in Ethiopia.

In her homeland, she was also famous as a dancer and an actress : the first, indeed to appear on the Ethiopian stage ! Born in 1926, she has been active on the music and entertainment scene since the mid-1950's. Her songs cover poetic and political themes, as well as traditional story-telling and poignant ballads.
