Equally at home blowing scorching R&B or tasty jazz, honkin' tenor saxman Hal Singer received his early experience with various Southwestern territory bands, including Ernie Fields. In 1939, he worked with the Jay McShann band (when Charlie Parker was a member), before moving to New York, and playing with Hot Lips Page, Earl Bostic, Don Byas, and Roy Eldridge (with whom he first recorded in 1944). After the war, he signed on with Lucky Millinder's orchestra, and in 1948, with Duke Ellington. In this same year, his instrumental Savoy recording "Cornbread" became a big R&B hit, followed by "Beef Stew". Other food-related hits followed - all on this volume.
