Coleman Hawkins' career was remarkable for its span, from the first recordings of blues singer Mamie Smith to his work with Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins and others in the sixties. The Hawk's name has become synonymous with the tenor sax, an instrument he played with such authority and artistry that listeners and critics long ago ran out of superlatives, the power of his playing matched by a seemingly limitless improvisational flow of ideas.

These 1954 tracks of Hawkins' quartet and sextet were apparently among his own favourites from a prolific recording career and feature top sidemen from that time: Billy Taylor, Milt Hinton, Jo Jones, Emmett Berry and Eddie Bert. A swinging session.
