This excellent DVD surveys the life story of Compay Segundo - one of the most celebrated musicians in the history of Cuban 'son'. A great and highly individual singer, composer & guitarist, who became an international world music icon through his leading involvement in the Buena Vista phenomenon.
Featured artists include: Omara Portuondo, Pablo Milanes, Guajiro Mirabal, Eliades Ochoa, & Jorge Gomez; and there are live performances of many of his best-known songs, like "Chan Chan", "Las Flores de la Vida", "La Negra Tomasa", etc.
In a life of almost 100 years, he performed & recorded with many legends of Cuban music, including Beny More, Sindo Garay & Miguel Matamoros. In the 1920's he invented the 'armonico' - a specially customized guitar. Following Fidel Castro's rise to power, Segundo worked as a cigar roller before returning to music during the late 1980s. |
