Erik Satie, one feels, would surely be delighted with the notion that his music, duly transcribed, would be used as propaganda by the ‘Mandolin Liberation Front’ – a partisan but non-political organisation presently comprising, it would appear, the four members of the Melonious Quartet. This CD makes their case quite splendidly, with virtuosity where required, and they deserve a rapid increase in the number of their supporters – not least, perhaps, for including an ‘encore’ by Thelonious Monk!
