The years that followed the Second World War were particularly fruitful ones for the solo repertoire of the clarinet. Strauss’ Duett-Concertino for clarinet and bassoon was composed for a bassoonist friend and first performed in 1948, at the time when Copland was working on his Concerto for clarinet, which was given its first performance by its dedicatee, Benny Goodman, in 1950. Lutoslawski’s Dance Preludes were written in 1955, (originally for clarinet & piano), but were not given their first performance in their present form until 1963. Both of the soloists on this recording quickly established themselves among France’s leading players at an early age and both were appointed Professor of their respective instruments at the Paris Conservatoire. Nielsen’s earliest opus, the Little Suite for orchestra, completes this very enjoyable disc
