From Detroit, The Royals sang smooth ballads in the style of the Orioles but transmuted into the Midnighters some time after Hank Ballard joined. It was Ballard who secured the group’s hits with a more rocking style… up tempo numbers with risqué lyrics, notably Work with me Annie in 1954 and several spin-off Annie songs. Ballard went on to gain a place in popular music history by writing The Twist and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
