LaVern Baker graduated from the blues shouting Little Miss Sharecropper to Atlantic recording star, riding the trends of black popular music and exerting a major influence on the pop songs of the fifties. She lost out heavily to white singers who covered her records and frequently voiced her resentment. Though she appeared in a couple of Alan Freed’s classic rock ‘n’ roll films and on the Ed Sullivan Show, she was never quite able to cross over to mainstream success, scoring only one national top twenty hit when Tweedle Dee reached #14.
All her early recordings are collected here…as a band vocalist and, later, under her own name.
