Debut recording by a brilliant new female singer. This has become a crowded area of the market in recent years but Julie Hardy, New Hampshire-born and New York-based, is a talent to watch. She is a superb improviser, with an expressive, rounded tone, great technical ability and is also a fine composer with 4 songs to her credit on this disc. Her specialty is using her voice as jazz instrument, and two of the tracks are ‘wordless songs’.

Comparisons with Annie Ross, Sheila Jordan or Norma Winstone may come to mind, but Hardy has very much her own style. She’s just as fluent and original with standards - here putting her imprint on Rogers & Hart’s “My Romance” and Cole Porter’s “It All Right With Me”, as well as an unusual jazz reading of the Beatles’ “And I Love Her (Him)”. She receives excellent support from the young New York musicians, including pianist Randy Ingram, tenor saxist Rob Stillman, Ben Street on bass and Adam Cruz, drums.
