Lula Reed took a common route – from church to night club stage –and was the first to release I’ll Drown in My (Own) Tears, joining the coterie of stylists who closely followed Dinah Washington’s lead in the early 1950s . She made most of her recordings with husband and bandleader Sonny Thompson and despite singing bluesy ballads with great style and conviction she eventually abandoned the “devil’s music” altogether (four gospel songs are included here).
