”Santa Milonga” by Daniel Melingo is a Top of The World Choice in the June/July 2005 issue of Songlines. It is the first release on the new Manana label, created by Argentinian Eduardo Makaroff (guitarist with the acclaimed Gotan Project) to spotlight contemporary tango - not Gotan offshoots but the varied Tango artists and styles that have inspired and influenced them.

Daniel Melingo was born in Buenos Aires in 1957. He is a singer-composer who remains faithful to the traditional tango rhythms and instruments like the button accordion. But he adds a modern twist. He writes and sings about odd characters who walk the streets of his home city - in a street-wise lingo that only Argentines would understand. By all accounts he’s quite a character himself - and was a member of Argentinean rock band Los Abuelos de la Nada in the early '80s; made albums on US Polygram and the DBN label in the 90’s; and has appeared on many tango compilations.

Reviews
Songlines - Sue Steward
The music is overwhelmingly post-Piazzolla, with melodramatic staccato rhythms…
HMV Choice - Phil Meadley
While Santa Milongo possesses unusual elements the album largely stays true to the tango's traditional ethos of dramatic violin, tapped rhythms, button accordion and impassioned vocals.
