| Guy Deplus taught a whole generation of French clarinettists and is revered for his artistry and beautiful tone, which is bright but warm and sweet. The works featured on this happy disc will be largely unknown to listeners, but the excellent notes accompanying this CD give a full historical and biographical background. The Mozart works derive from fragments that were completed by Franz Beyer and some anonymous composers. The delightful work for basset horn is one of only a few surviving manuscripts from classical times, when it was a favourite solo instrument; the two substantial quartets for clarinet & strings by Göpfert are likewise rare survivors from the same period. |
