Pete La Roca (Sims), formerly with Sonny Rollins, was the original drummer in the John Coltrane quartet and more or less gave up music after this 1967 LP….it was 30 years before he would lead another studio session. These are all La Roca’s original compositions. Turkish Women at the Bath, inspired by the Ingres painting, and other titles such as Love Planet, Majoun and Bliss show a musician exploring the sensual.

The quartet includes Chick Corea on piano (soon to take up electric keyboard with Miles Davis).

From the original sleeve notes: “The writing displays an assimilation and development of aspects of Jazz, Latin, Afro-Cuban and Oriental music..”
