The prolific output of Gülbahar Kültür, a Turkish DJ and compiler, continues with this tribute to Greek music, a fitting reminder that Popular Music is not confined to the shores of English-speaking cultures. This is especially relevant at the time of release, because of the recent success by Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Aside from big artists like Mikis Theodorakis and Nana Mouskouri, not much music is exported from Greece, and although many would lay claim to knowledge of Greek Classical culture, few Western Europeans could cite references to current musical output. It is an uphill task to redress this balance, so there is something for everyone in this collection.. The listing of the artists covered goes from Mikis Theodorakis (undoubtedly one of the great composers of Europe), over to Eleni Vitali (the diva of Greek folk-music) to Terror X Crew (the first hip hop band from Greece) and to Cyanna (trans-experimental-electronic music from Athens).
There is a stunning range from Greek Blues (Rembetika), hip hop, laika, sounds of antiquity in modern style, gypsy music, R&B, folk-music, electronic, rock, reggae, dub and pop.
