Frank Socolow’s transitional style on the tenor was heard with many dance bands…it was this journeyman work which formed the bulk of his employment in the music business. Having worked the reed section for Boyd Raeburn, Buddy Rich, Chubby Jackson and Artie Shaw, Frank was highly acclaimed by his colleagues yet, as often happens, his talents as a soloist escaped wider notice. Here, together for the first time on one disc, are the rare recordings he made as leader: a 1945 session with Bud Powell on piano and nine tunes with a sextet, cut eleven years later.
Reviews
Jazz Journal - Brian Robinson
This is an important sound document as it contains, as far as I'm aware, everything which Frank Socolow recorded as a leader. He was a highly regarded section player and worked in the bands of Boyd Raeburn, Buddy Rich and Artie Shaw.
