From a wealthy family, Cole Porter was born in Peru, studied law and music at Yale and Harvard, was in the French army during World War I, and began songwriting in Paris in the '20s while married to a wealthy woman. Success and fame followed from 1929 onwards. In 1937, his legs were crushed by a horse, rendering him a partial invalid from then on. He died in 1964. Many consider him America’s greatest songwriter.
