This unusual recital by Swiss mezzo Maria Riccarda Wesseling features her in extended excerpts from 3 Handel operas, singing female (rather than castrato) roles, because she firmly believes that the great composer gave “more flesh and bones” to these characters. The result is a superb listening experience, much enhanced by the sense of partnership between Wesseling and Wolfgang Katschner’s ‘Lautten Compagney Berlin’, who have often performed the complete operas together – and it shows.
