Billy Butterfield could play pretty ballads and heated traditional jazz with equal skill. Famous while with Bob Crosby's Orchestra for taking the main solo on the original "What's New," he also worked with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, World's Greatest Jazz Band and had his own big band. Butterfield did extensive studio work in the '50s and '60s, occasionally emerging for trad gigs …this album is made up from two exciting live dates with a tremendous band led by cornetist Andy Bartha, recorded 1969 and the early ‘70s.
Reviews
Jazz Review - Anthony Troon
All the lingua franca of the Condon Club and there is every evidence that the highly proficient Bartha and his sidemen have been playing them for some time.
Jazz Journal - Bert Whyatt
If for you enjoyment of jazz as entertainment is not to be taken with stern-faced and hypercritical judgement, you won't be far off lots of pleasure
