Two classic 1954 Mingus albums, ‘Jazz Composers Workshop’ and ‘Jazzical Moods’, are reissued together on this new Fresh Sound Premium Series digipak CD, featuring: Thad Jones (tp), John LaPorta (cl, as), Teo Macero, George Barrow (ts, bars), Mal Waldron (p), Charles Mingus (b), Rudy Nichols, Clem DeRosa (d), Jackson Wiley (cello).

The 12 compositions are performed by two of the famed Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop groups and are watershed recordings representing the grass roots from which many of his innovative forms and expressions grew. From then on, Mingus became one of the most influential composers and bassists in jazz history. After the first date, he said about the improvised interplay between every instrument: “I feel that it is usually impossible to attempt such ‘delicacies’ with musicians who do not enjoy the unusual freedom or understand the thought of the leading instrument. Teo Macero, John LaPorta, George Barrow and Mal Waldron, of course, are just as responsible as I am for the final construction”.

Reviews
Jazzwise - Brian Priestley
What we have here relates to his relatively groping mid-40s and is on the cusp of the late 50's achievements.
Jazz Journal - Derek Ansell
The overall sound of the ensembles and the high standard of playing generally, suggests great organisation and thought on the part of leader Mingus. I can and do recommend the music, heartily.
