To connoisseurs Betty Carter was the consummate jazz vocalist, a singer for the modern era whose phrasing, inspired improvisations and sheer musicality were unrivalled. The LP Out There was released in 1958 (title and cover art place it firmly in the Sputnik era) around the time that she had been touring with Miles Davis and is divided between arrangements for small and large ensembles. Studio musicians include Wynton Kelly (piano) and Kenny Dorham (trumpet) as well as top lady trombonist Melba Liston.

Betty Carter's singing is exemplary and on some tracks shows how well she could give a straightforward rendition of a song. So it's the singing which causes me to recommend this.
