This outstanding mid-price release features the great Betty Carter at the onset of her recording career as a leader. Due to ongoing contractual problems, reissues of the great singer’s discography are few and far between. This disc contains her 1st, 2nd and 4th complete studio sessions recorded under her own name.: they formed the two complete LPs “Meet Betty Carter and Ray Bryant” (May 1955) and “The Modern Sound Of Betty Carter” (August 1960) plus the “Social Call” session (April 1956).

This edition also boasts 6 bonus tracks by Ray Bryant - in a trio setting with Wendell Marshall and Philly Joe Jones, recorded in June 1955. Other star musicians featured on these dates are : Conte Candoli, Al Cohn, Hank Jones, Gigi Gryce, Urbie Green, Jimmy Cleveland, Milt Hinton, Nick Travis and The Richard Wess Orchestra.

Reviews
Jazz Journal - Graham Colombe
One of the greatest jazz singers. For Betty Carter's 1960 sessions in particular this is a very welcome release.
Jazzwise - Alyn Shipton
In her last years Carter was one of the most original and idiosyncratic of all jazz singers. This 1955-60 package charts at least part of her progress there. ***
