These extraordinary recordings were made at the Brandeis (Massachusetts) Jazz Festival, held at its university in 1957 - and they form a key watershed in the then evolution of ‘third stream’, modal and avant-garde jazz. As well as Bill Evans, the 16-piece orchestra featured many top jazz artists including : Art Farmer, Jimmy Knepper, Hal McKusick, Teo Macero, John Laporta, Teddy Charles and Barry Galbraith.

The 3 concerts were organized to showcase the work of 6 different composers : Gunther Schuller, Harold Shapero & Milton Babbitt represented classical composers; while Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell and Charles Mingus (who plays on one piece) were selected as the jazz composers/arrangers. Schuller and Russell were also involved as conductors.

In addition to the 6 festival tracks, there are 3 rare bonus tracks featuring Bill Evans in vibist Don Elliot’s Quartet, recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival, less than a month later the same year.

Reviews
Jazz Journal - Graham Colombe
Schuller was behind the Brandeis programme of Third Stream compositions and it contains some fascinating stuff. Bill Evans and Art Farmer take impressive solos.
