Recordings from 1957– thirty years after Don Redman left the Fletcher Henderson orchestra to join McKinney’s Cotton Pickers . As one of the first jazz musicians to write complex arrangements for larger orchestras he became a key figure in the development of Swing and the birth of the Big Band era. The 30 tunes here, all arranged by Redman, include a handful of his own compositions ….. as well as leading the band he plays alto and soprano sax, piano, vibes and celeste. Soloists include: Joe Wilder, Charlie Shavers, Coleman Hawkins, Seldon Powell and Al Cohn.
Reviews
Jazzwise - Alyn Shipton
Multi-instrumentalist Redman assembled this 1957 studio big band to produce 30 tracks of marvellous quality.
Jazz Journal - Barry McRae
On show is a varied and pleasing programme, its band parts are played by masters of the genre and their solos that are consistently impressive. Both of the rhythm sections cook nicely and there is a confident relaxation throughout.
