This fourth volume in DANACORD’s admirable series of Danish piano concertos brings back to life two superb examples in late romantic style, as ever excellently played by Oleg Marshev. Bendix, like all his Danish contemporaries, suffered from comparison with the ‘modernist’ genius of Carl Nielsen, though the evidence of this concerto, and his 4 symphonies (DACOCD436/7) suggests a reappraisal is overdue – and 21st century listeners, unlike those in his own times, will not be put off by his colourful private life! The Simonsen work, too, is well worthy of resurrection – a super pair of CD premières.
