Brilliant young Swede Karin Dornbusch here couples her excellent version of Nielsen’s already “classic” clarinet concerto, with two less familiar works by ‘Nordic’ composers. This is the only available recording of John Fernström’s attractive, traditional concerto, while Finnish composer Jouni Kaipainen’s ‘Carpe Diem’, first performed in 1990, is a much more modern work. Dedicated performances from soloist and orchestra, well recorded on home ground in Gävle, make for a thoroughly worthwhile disc.
