Remembered mainly for his soul-funk-blues hits of the 70s, ‘Johnny Guitar’ Watson (a nickname derived from the 1954 Sterling Hayden movie) had begun his career in the early 50s and these West Coast recordings soon followed. His electric guitar techniques, invention and stage showmanship predated Jimi Hendrix by a decade and may well have been a direct influence (check out “Space Guitar” recorded in 1953). Indeed, Watson’s massive contribution to Rhythm & Blues has been repeatedly overlooked.

He played in the bands of Amos Milburn & Chuck Higgins, toured with Little Richard & Larry Williams, wrote “Gangster of Love” in 1957 - covered in the 70’s by Steve Miller; and recorded with Frank Zappa on “One Size Fits All” in 1975, before signing to DJM and having several huge-selling singles and albums.
