The second release on a new Swedish label, Country & Eastern, is another pearl from the archives of Indian music, recorded in Bombay in 1968, and featuring the ‘rudra veena’ master Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and the vocalist Zia Fariduddin Dagar, with harmonium accompaniment by Ritwik Sanyal. This ‘dhrupad’ recital presents one 70-minute raga in which the improvisations are like subtle conversations, with themes gradually developing to a musical climax of oneness.
