Tommy Lee Jones’ directorial debut, Three Burials won awards at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival for Best Actor (Jones himself) and Best Screenplay (Guillermo Arriaga). It’s the story of a West Texas ranch foreman who kidnaps the murderer of his Mexican farmer friend, disinters the body and carries it on a dangerous and quixotic journey to be buried in Mexico.
The music was written by Marco Beltrami, who studied with Academy award winning composer Jerry Goldsmith. His previous credits include Wes Craven’s Scream for which he created a Morricone-influenced score far removed from the usual horror movie clichés. His Three Burials soundtrack, which evokes the dusty landscapes of Texas and Mexico, is punctuated by some classic country and Tex-Mex songs performed by Dwight Yoakum (who also appears in the film), Merle Haggard, Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez and others.
