Weiss is regarded as the greatest composer for the lute – indeed, if he had written more music for other (less obsolescent!) instruments, and actively sought a publisher, he might today be celebrated as an equal of Bach and Handel. Yasunori Imamura, Japanese lutenist and scholar now resident in Switzerland, is certainly one of today’s leading exponents of Weiss’s lovely instrument, so the news that this disc is Volume 1 of a series (of over 600 works!) is a promise of much pleasure, both present and future.
