Californian Bill Holman was first engaged by Stan Kenton in 1952 and two years later it was Kenton who produced the Holman octet sides for Capitol, accompanied by a glowing reference: Bill Holman is one of the most amazing talents of this era ….One of the composers of modern day linear writing, he has already affected the necessary change in the growth of orchestrated jazz. The orchestra sides are from 1957. Stu Williamson (tp & tb) and Herb Geller (as) from the original octet sessions are present again alongside other outstanding West Coast jazzmen – Conte Candoli, Charlie Mariano, Mel Lewis etc.
André Previn’s verdict: Bill Holman is a first rate saxophonist but his true instrument is the orchestra.
Reviews
Jazz Journal - Richard Palmer
Bill Holman is to my mind one of the greatest arrangers jazz has seen or ever will see. For any number of reasons, therefore, you owe it to yourself to buy this record. I can promise that you won't regret it.
Jazzwise - Alyn Shipton
Holman's piano-less octet are the stars here with 10 swinging tasteful tracks of urbane Los Angeles cool, with Herb Geller and Bob Gordon. ***
