This CD is part of a four volume collection featuring all the sessions led by Niehaus between 1954 and 1957….a period when he was also working as soloist and arranger for Stan Kenton.

Vol 4 includes the LP “I Swing for You” for the first time on CD. The Niehaus group on this album featured tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins and it is his first LP “On Stage” (incl 2 Niehaus arrangements) which makes up the second half of the disc.

The originals are bright and crisp, and the arrangements of standard and reportory themes are clever without being clever, and smooth without ever flirting with lite. A welcome reminder of a skilful writer and player who subsequently reserved his considerable talents for the day job. Lennie shouldn't be written off.
